3] – THE ORGANIZING LIST will be the primary decision-making mechanism of the National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance [NCNR].  It will be augmented by conference calls and possibly in-person meetings as needed.  It will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each local, regional, or national organization (not coalitions) that wishes to actively work to carry out the NCNR campaign of facilitating and organizing nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq.

THE NOTICES LIST will include only notices of NCNR actions and related information and is open to any interested person to subscribe.  It will be moderated to maintain focus & will include periodic notices about getting involved in NCNR national organizing.  To join the NOTICES List, send an email message to ncnrnotices-subscribe@lists.riseup.net. 7] – Brad Hathaway spearheads an effort to sell donated used stamps to raise money for different humanitarian causes around the world. 8] – Volunteers are needed to make a Peace Corps rally a success.  Come to the National Peace Corps Association, 1900 L St., NW, Suite 404 (Farragut North or Farragut West Metro) for flyer distribution/sign making/phone banking. 11] – A peace vigil takes place every Friday from noon to 1 PM on Pennsylvania Ave., by the press gate to the White House. It is organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker. Call 202-882-9649.

12] – There is a peace vigil to support the Congo every Friday, 4 to 6:30 PM at the Rwandan Embassy, 1714 New Hampshire Ave, NW.  Call the Rwandan Embassy at 202-232-2882 and register your concern about Rwanda's aggression towards the Congo.

13] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore will be visiting the office of Rep. John Sarbanes on Fri., June 12 at 4:30 PM.  Meet in the lobby at 4:15 PM of the building in which he has a Towson office, 600 Baltimore Ave, Suite 303, Baltimore 21204.  Then we will go to his office to discuss why he voted to further fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  At 5 PM, we will demonstrate on Bosley Ave. against war funding.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

 

14] – There is a silent vigil on Fri., June 12 from 5 to 6 PM outside of Homewood Friends Meeting, 3107 N. Charles St., in opposition to war with Iraq. Placards say: "War Is Not the Answer." The silent vigil is sponsored by AFSC, Homewood Friends and Stony Run Meetings.

15] – The Washington Peace Letter is seeking submissions by Fri., June 12.  Send articles (500-1000 words), book and movie reviews, poetry, photos and art to info@washingtonpeacecenter.org.

16] – Support the Washington Peace Center and make pottery while doing it on Fri., June 12 from 6 to 9 PM at Color Me Mine, 2439 18th St., NW in Adams Morgan between Columbia Road and Kalorama Road. The studio fee is $10 for adults and $7 for children. The fee includes all of the design materials and glazing & firing. Each piece of pottery is priced individually. 20] – From Fri., June 12 to Sun., June 14, the ADC Annual National Convention will be held at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.  The ADC Youth Empowerment Night is starting at 9 PM on June 12. This entertainment program will promote Arab American talent from around the country. It is free for convention participants, and $10 for others. 21] –  There is an opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing, usually every Friday of the month, in the JHU ROTC Bldg. at 8 PM.  Turn south on San Martin Dr. from the intersection of Univ. 22] – Friends House, 17715 Meeting House Rd., Sandy Spring, MD 20860, hosts a peace vigil every Saturday, 10:30 to 11:30 AM, on the corner of Rt. 108 and Georgia Ave. in Olney, MD.  The next vigil is June 13. Call Chuck Harker at 301-570-7167. 

 

23] –  Each Saturday, 11 AM – 1 PM, Chester County Peace Movement holds a peace vigil in West Chester in front of the Chester County Courthouse, High & Market Sts. This vigil has been the target of counter-demonstrators and harassment from the "Chester County Victory Movement" but has grown and persisted.  Go to www.ccpeace.org.

24] The Capital Pride Festival is Sun., June 14 from 11 AM to 6 PM on Pennsylvania Ave. in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol.  RuPaul will be headlining this year's main stage entertainment.  The suggested donation is from $2 to $5.  No one will be turned away.

25] There will be a peace vigil on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon on Sat., June 13. Look for the blue banner with the message, "Seek Peace and Pursue It.--Psalms 34:14." 32] – A Robert Redford narrated multi-media slideshow exploring the wilderness landscapes and canyonlands of Utah will be shown on Sun., June 14 at 4 PM at the Maryland Presbyterian Church, 1105 Providence Road, Towson--about 1/4 mile north of the Baltimore Beltway Providence Road Exit 28.  Refreshments will be served, along with information on actions you can take to ensure protection for these unique, fragile and threatened treasures. The slide show will be presented by the Greater Baltimore Group of the Sierra Club in co-operation with the Utah Wilderness Coalition. 36] – On Sun., June 14 from 7 to 9 PM at Busboys and Poets, 2021 14th St. NW, WDC, representatives from the OneVoice movement will discuss their organization.  It is an international grassroots movement with more than 650,000 signatories in roughly equal numbers both in Israel and in Palestine, working toward a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.   

37] – There is a weekly Pentagon Peace Vigil from 7 to 8 AM on Mondays, since 1987, outside the Pentagon Metro stop.  The next vigil is Mon., June 15, and it is sponsored by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker.  Call 202-882-9649.

39] – There is usually a vigil to abolish the death penalty every Monday from 5 to 6 PM, outside the prison complex and across the street from Maryland’s death row, at the corner of Madison Ave. and Fallsway in Baltimore.  The next vigil is scheduled for Mon., June 15. Call 410-233-0488.

 

40] – Casa Baltimore/Limay is seeking submissions for a logo that will convey, symbolically, who we are as an organization.  The logo will be used on brochures and other organizational materials, and possibly on other items like t-shirts.  The logo must be suitable for use in black-and-white reproductions. 41] – Life in Occupied Palestine: Eyewitness Stories and Photos will be shown at the Reel & Meal event on Mon., June 15.  It will be held this month at the Greenbelt Community Center, 15 Crescent Road, in room 202.   The screening starts at 7 PM, and an optional vegan meal will be offered from 6:30 PM.

The film is the work of Anna Baltzer, a Jewish-American Fulbright scholar.  It presents evidence she gathered, as a volunteer for the International Women's Peace Service, of human rights abuses in the West Bank. She also reports on the ideas of both Palestinian and Israeli activists supporting nonviolent resistance to the Israeli occupation.  A guest speaker will be Jim Fine, foreign policy analyst for the Friends Committee on National Legislation.  Reel & Meal is a monthly film series exploring vital environmental and social issues, sponsored by several local progressive grassroots organizations. This month's event was planned by the Peace & Justice Coalition, Prince George's County. 42] – On Mon., June 15, Fr. Louie Vitale, Franciscan priest and long-time resister, will speak at the Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, MD 21045.  Refreshments at 7 PM with the presentation at 7:30 PM.  The focus of his talk will be the SOA.  A free will offering will be requested. 43] – Baltimore United for Peace and Justice will meet at 7 PM on Mon., June 8 at the AFSC, 4806 York Road. The BUPJ agenda will include calling for a town hall meeting to discuss funding the infrastructure with the money currently going to warmaking.  As this meeting ends, the Pledge meeting will begin.

44] – The Crabshell Alliance will meet on Mon., June 15 at 7:15 PM in the Rotunda, 711 W. 40th Street, Room 209 [Clean Water Action office]. Go into the mall and take elevator in middle of building up to second floor, and 216 is to the left.  Call 410-206-3830. The mission of the Crabshell Alliance is to stop the construction of new nuclear power plants in Maryland, promote clean, safe, sustainable, and affordable energy, and educate the public about the hazards of nuclear power.

 

45] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore usually meets on Mondays at 7:30 PM at the AFSC, 4806 York Road [three blocks north of Coldspring Lane].  The next meeting will be June 15, and the agenda will include legislative visits, including a visit to John Sarbanes’ office, and an action at the DOJ.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

48] – There is a vigil to say "War Is Not the Answer" each Tuesday since September 11, 2001 at 4806 York Road. Join this ongoing vigil.  The next vigil is June 16 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.  Call Max at 410-366-1637.

49] – The Day of the African Child is an opportunity to celebrate two generations of poetry and activism in Southern Africa.  On Tues., June 16 from 6 to 8 PM, hear Comrade Fatso, Dennis Brutus and others in the Langston Room, Busboys & Poets, 14th & V Sts. Go to www.busboysandpoets.com.

50] – The Prince George's and Montgomery County Chapters of the ACLU present their annual meeting/dinner program titled, "Don't Spy on Me: Speaking Up for the First Amendment and Saying No to Police Spying." The featured speaker is David Rocah, ACLU-MD staff attorney and lead attorney in the Maryland State Police spying litigation. In attendance will be some of the 53 activists who were spied upon by the MSP, as well as Joshua Spalding, National ACLU Legislative Field Organizer.

The event will be held on Tues., June 16 at Paint Branch Unitarian Universalist Church, 3215 Powder Mill Road, Adelphi, MD, and begin with a reception at 6 PM, followed by a dinner at 6:30 PM and will conclude with a free program at 7:30 PM. 51] –  There is a meeting of Ecolocity DC every Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM at the EMERGENCE COMMUNITY ARTS COLLECTIVE, 733 Euclid St. NW, WDC 20001.  It is for people who live in, or are interested in making D.C. a transition town starting with an intentional community that will encompass clean energy, freecycle, natural building, organic farming, community salvage, new urbanism, etc. The next meeting will be on June 16. The National Women’s Law Center and our host committee invite you to a benefit reading at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre, 641 D St, NW, of a play written by Wendy Kout & Michele Willens. The performance on Tues., June 16 at 7 PM stars Wendie Malick as Helen Gahagan Douglas, James Naughton as Melvyn Douglas, Patrick Breen as Richard Nixon and Michael Dutra plays LBJ, JFK & everyone else. For the reading, the tickets are $50, and $100 with the reception. 65] – Torture Accountability Action Day is Thurs., June 25.  It begins with a rally in John Marshall Park, 501 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, WDC.  There will be tabling from 9 to 11 AM, and speakers until noon.  Then there will be a march to the Department of Justice to demand that Bush, Cheney et al. be indicted for various war crimes, including the use of torture. Some of us will risk arrest, if the attorney general fails to appoint a Special Prosecutor.  The Action Day is sponsored by numerous organizations, including After Downing Street and the National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance. 67] – The Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore hosts an End the War!
